SARA FLYNN - BIOGRAPHY

ARTIST STATEMENT

Sara Flynn studied ceramic design at the Crawford College of art and design in Cork, initially to diploma in 1992 and returning to complete her degree in 1998. It was during her degree year that she first began working with porcelain, a notoriously challenging and beautiful material which she now works with exclusively.

She and her husband Stuart Poole (Studio Technician) established their first studio and gallery together in Kinsale in 2000. They moved to Leap, West Cork in 2006. Sara's work has been exhibited internationally and is held in public collections.

Sara Flynn - Artist's Statement

The major concerns that my work deals with are a love of the process of throwing, an ongoing relationship with porcelain and a fascination with the theme of the vessel.

My work addresses two primary concerns. The first deals with the enjoyment of the qualities of the porcelain and the practice of manipulating and sometimes cutting and reassembling freshly thrown forms to highlight movement and volume. Roads, pathways and hedgerows inform the alterations of the thrown form to produce these sculptural decorative vessels.

The second body of work takes on the challenge of making pure, simple bowls, striving for the perfect balance between rim, body and foot rim. The aim is that whether the bowl is large or small it should have presence and form a relationship with the viewer.

All work is fired in a gas kiln (reduction) to 1280° centigrade, offering a variety of colours and finishes ranging from complex blacks and vibrant reds to cool and subtle greens and whites.
